NDCX-II

NDCX-II (Neutralized Drift Compression Experiment) is an ion induction accelerator enabling the study of rapid heating of, and radiation effects in materials using high-brightness ion beams. Starting with ~1 μs duration injected pulse, it simultaneously accelerates and compresses the beam to a few ns duration and mm-radius at the target, including neutralized drift compression and focusing.

Specifications:

  • Maximum ion kinetic energy: 1.1 MeV

  • Minimum bunch length at target: 2 ns

  • Ion source: filament driven plasma, multi-aperture extraction.

  • Ions Species: p, He+; singly ionized. Heavier species atomic masses are available.

  • Number of ions/ bunch: 10^11
